by Jerry Byres - Maui Time Magazine - July 6, 1999Having been a fan of Greg diPiazza's last TWISTED FISHERMAN project, I was more than happy when his new one arrived. And this one lived up to my expectations!
Greg seems to get some of Maui's best musicians and takes the handcuffs off, letting their creative juices flow. Any CD that starts with a didgeridoo solo sure gets my attention. The next song, "Back in Time" has a decided middle eastern flavor, with lyrics about an ideal Hawaiian dreamscape. Next comes a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", and this is no ordinary cover. It starts with a mean groove by the great rhythm section of bassist Billy Wilkes and drummer Gerry Davis and includes a nice steel pan solo (with real steel pans supplied by Courtney Jones); now that's the way to do a cover song! Next is the Beckish "Aerosollovespray" with another nice groove.
Another fave is "Hong Kong Knights" with a wonderful piano solo by Gene Argell, followed by "Fairytale" and "Revolution" where Paul Bunuan starts to really let it rip on saxophone.
Greg has really assembled a great cast of players and given them freedom that you don't see much in music these days. The songwriting and production are both excellent, and even the cover art stands out. Needless to say, I enjoy this CD very much. It shows a different side to locally produced music, one that pushes the boundaries of music and songwriting. The CD is available at Tropical Disc and Bounty Music.
So if you're in the mood for something a little different, check this one out! And if you're a fan of didgeridoo (supplied by Rafael Delfin) this one's definitely for you. Nice job Greg!
